Dept. of Education to Investigate Duke-UNC Gaza Conference

Following Request from Rep. George Holding

.
WASHINGTON
- Following a formal request from Rep. George Holding (NC-02), Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has directed the Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Education to investigate the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies. Secretary DeVos’ letter to Rep. Holding announcing the probe can be viewed here.

Rep. Holding sent a letter to Secretary Devos on April 15th requesting an investigation into reports of severe anti-Israeli bias and explicit anti-Semitism at a taxpayer-funded conference, “Conflict Over Gaza: People, Politics, and Possibilities,” held between March 22nd-24th at the University of North Carolina (UNC), in conjunction with Duke University (Duke). Rep. Holding’s April 15th letter to Sec. DeVos can be viewed here.

“I appreciate Secretary DeVos treating this matter with the seriousness and attention it deserves,” said Congressman Holding. “Honest academic debate featuring diverse perspectives and a wide-range of views is critical in a democratic society and a cornerstone of America’s educational system.”

“However, I hope we can all agree that it is irresponsible and counterproductive for taxpayer dollars to fund overtly biased advocacy under the guise of constructive academic discourse.”
